How to Avoid Mondays

MondaysOnOff

Every home, office and factory should have one.

Once Monday is deactivated the coffee machine starts automatically.

OMG, I need one of these.

We’re back to inclement weather. The sun has gone, but we did have a fine weekend.

The new Maracanã football stadium saw it’s first official game yesterday. Brazil vs England 2-2.

Still, a draw is better than getting your nose rubbed first time up in a multimillion dollar refurbish, and that looked like a definite possibility until very late in the second half.

I slept through the first half; an afternoon nap. I woke to 0-0 half time, so I missed little.

Lunch yesterday, hamburgers and wine, dinner yesterday, hamburgers and beer. I didn’t feel like doing anything extravagant, but at least I didn’t repeat the lunchtime wine, that’s what made me sleepy and miss the first half.

This is my ‘beefless‘ week, so lunch today, ham and mushroom quiche. *Looks at clock* Time I made the pastry. No wine today, I have classes.

Still no sign of my Mean Green Leaf Eating Machine, however, I still have hopes to see him as a moth. How long do they remain as a chrysalis? I must google that.

rolinharoxa

Rolinha roxa

I swept the yard yesterday, including the remains of some of Lixo’s hunting activities, two birds and a mouse. No sooner did I turn my back and there were feathers everywhere!

He’d caught another rolinha. They’re the main ones he catches, the other birds are too smart.

They’re a sort of dovey kind of bird.

Back to sweeping the yard again. Lixo sat and watched, quite disgusted that I would treat his trophy like that. On to the compost heap and buried, quite undignified.

Must off and make pastry.

An Intense Monday

apilaointensoI am having an intense Monday.

I used to drink Pilão coffee all the time, but once it got above R$6 for a half kilo (that’s about a pound for our non-metric cousins) I stopped and opted for acceptable brands that were below my R$6 threshold. Pilão is hitting over R$8 now, and I refused to pay.

I bought a sack of Intenso (I am not going to translate that, if you can’t figure it out then maybe you shouldn’t be left alone with a computer) when it was on special, and trying to economise, I only bought one some weeks ago and just opened it this morning.

Oh, it is so yummy!

I should have bought more.

Already looking forward to Friday

Already looking forward to Friday

Monday, my only student has cancelled. Tomorrow is St George’s Day here in Rio. St George is the state’s patron. Nobody wants to interrupt the weekend with a day’s honest labour when there is a holiday on Tuesday. So, let’s take Monday off too… This is a very Brazilian thing. I’m trying to arrange a substitute student, but I doubt he will ring and confirm.

We’re still having a cool spell. Cold fronts from Argentina are responsible, they keep sending them north. Buenos Aires doesn’t like them either, the last one dumped a shit load of rain on the city causing a lot of flooding and damage.

This week is a ‘beef week’. I managed a successful beefless week last week. Had a great feed of batter fried mussels on Saturday; Homemade chicken burger on Friday, Bacon and mushroom pizza on Wednesday and left over pizza on Thursday. Yesterday I had the last of the sliced pork and gravy, roast potatoes and pickled beetroot for a late lunch.

Today, I’m planning a real hamburger for supper and I’ll probably get a big sub-sandwich for lunch from the supermarket for lunch; that is if I can tear myself away from the PC long enough to get to the supermarket. Which sometimes doesn’t happen. I like an element of flexibility in my plans, it goes well with my habit of procrastination.

Want one

BBQ

Yes, want one!

Saw this while I was browsing yesterday. Although grill plates on left would probably be replaced by pizza oven…

Who needs a garage anyway? I don’t have a car, it only serves to dry my washing on the line when it rains like yesterday.

Actually, it could be built and not encroach on the car parking space. Have to think more about that.

Fourteen bloggers ‘Liked’ my post HungWon-on yesterday, now I’m not complaining, I liked getting so many ‘Likes’ a good half dozen more than my posts normally attract. It has, however, left me grappling with the horns with a dilemma; did they like in sympathy, or were they chortling about an old fool. The latter was reinforced in a letter I got from my younger brother (I am 60+, he is 60-, will be 60 this year) when he referred to “my dotage”.

FalseTeethMy dotage… I was always under the impression that one was in their dotage as they became a little dependent, a little wobbly on their pins, forgetful where they put their beer, unable to spell certain words (I just had 3 attempts to get ‘forgetful’ right, but that was a typo – OKAY?) and mumbling when they speak because they forgot their false teeth.

Couldn’t resist that image… LOL

And, and… use a walking stick. Okay, so I use a walking stick, that’s only 20% of the way to dotage. I’m not there yet!

banhaMoving right along. I almost committed a heinous crime. This is my second ‘beefless‘ week of the month in my resolve to limit the amount of beef I am responsible for. I planned lunch, a lovely pork roast that would warm the cockles of my heart today being coolish, cold sliced pork to go with a salad on a day not cool like today and at least two days of pork sandwiches for nibbles. Then I realised I was going to use beef dripping to cook it in the roasting dish. See how easy it is to fall into little traps. Yes, I buy my dripping, because I don’t roast enough to collect the real McCoy. I used to buy pork lard, but I just recently discovered that the green pack was beef dripping, much preferred because of the flavour. So in the spirit of the ‘beefless‘ week, I will dry roast it and save the lard produced.

stopbelievinginsantaMonday, so far it has been an unMondayish Monday, but there’s plenty of time yet for it to be a Mondaylike Monday.

I’ll leave you with a thought for the week.

Ever wonder why you get socks and underwear for Christmas as an adult?

It’s because you grew up and  adults lack imagination.

Hump Day

humpdaykid-largeYes, it’s Wednesday, almost over the hump.

This week is not a beefless week, I had a wonderful homemade prime meat hamburger on Monday night for supper. Tuesday was my big sushi day for the month with a brie snack for supper, and today it will be chili con carne (yet to be made) for lunch.

Lixo was a great help yesterday while I was away in town, I came home and found him doing the ironing again. He’s such a good cat.

On Monday I found something strange on another blog. The blog doesn’t have any content, not a single post. But the About page, which has the default WP blurb, had a lot of likes.

Default 'About' page with 19 likes

Default ‘About’ page with 19 likes

This puzzles me. Is this proof that people press ‘like’, just for the sake of pressing ‘like’ ?

Or are there really people out there who like the WP default blurb?

What’s the reason behind this?

I have had two lessons today. One has already cancelled.

I really must get some blogging done because today has been mostly nap. I was deprived of my nappability yesterday. In fact I would still have been napping if my student hadn’t rung to cancel.

My Train of Thought

trainofthought1It’s true, it’s Sunday, I have had one coffee, but it’s just not enough.

Rained overnight, not a lot, but enough to wet the ground. Remains overcast and cool, not good BBQ weather.

It was hard yesterday, the neighbours had a BBQ out in the sun; all that lovely beef, and here’s me on a beefless week. But there was plenty of pork and chicken too, so I was not deprived.

Today is the last day of my first beefless week, given that all the beef in the house (bought before this week) is in the freezer, it should be successful.

I shot a small video yesterday, actually there were three pieces, but Movie Maker wouldn’t let me splice them together.

There you have it, a brief glimpse of a Brazilian neighbourhood BBQ.

Must blog along, this is only my third post of the day, five to go, including a Sunday Travel Tales here.

Bollocks

broken-clock

Dead clock

My wall clock has died.

I am still running on 10:30, and the lunch hour has been and gone.

Rained last night, rain a lot, rained a lot this morning too. The rain leaked through the ceiling and onto my new carpet. I am not amused.

Last night in the rain the net went down for about three hours.

I was in the middle of writing to my brother, who had sent me a copy of Mum’s will. It was hard seeing her signature, knowing that it is probably the last one I’ll ever see.

I have resolved to eat less beef. I discovered that beef has a huge water footprint. See posts here and here on Eco-Crap. But I love my BBQ… I have actually resolved to have beefless weeks each month. So this week, being my first beefless week, the menu is chicken and pork.

missingfileI was looking for a file last night… but couldn’t find it.

Why doesn’t Windows have a warning for this?

Windows is so inefficient.

I would have accepted the wine option.

It’s too late to have my planned lunch, which was to be roast chicken and potatoes. I will go and gaze deeply into my fridge after this post and see what I can rustle up quickly.

I maintain that I learn something new everyday; as indeed I did today…

incredible_animal_facts_06There, that puts a whole new slant on a “threesome”.

My next question is, why?

I’ll have to google that later.

Later, I’m off to peer into my fridge, beats contemplating my navel here thinking about lunch.
