A Great Mystery

carelessmatchThis is so true.

One careless match and you can raze an entire forest,

But you just try to light a BBQ, one match, no way.

My method is okay. I usually use a small plastic cup (recycled from the botequim, of course), half fill with alcohol and pile charcoal on top. Or, if there’s no alcohol, I use torn cardboard from an old carton, this can take a little longer and requires some puff. The end result is always okay.

Hot day. Watered plants, Coffeed me. Nap-fued. The rest of the day to do nothing, and I shall do it very well. I am after all, well qualified in nothing.

An afternoon at the botequim is high on the cards.

My recent posts have attracted lots of Likes, two of them setting a new record of 24 each. Now I’m aiming for 25…

I’m a bit miffed. I regularly read The Guardian news. Yesterday, I clicked on their environment page and… WTF? They’ve changed it. It used to be a nice orderly list of articles to read, now it’s a splash page with lots of photos spread across the screen. No order now, you don’t know where to look, have to hunt and study looking for something of interest. I gave up. Why do they ‘fix’ things that don’t need fixing?

The Silly Box: A hotel in Blackpool ‘fined’ a couple £100 for a negative review on Trip Advisor. They simply deducted the fine from their credit card. Bloody cheek. I can see there’s going to be a fight over this. Apparently, they warm people in their booking agreement about this and consider they have the right. These insidious practices need to be stamped out; boycott the bastards.

Update on that. The fine has been scrapped… haha, obviously they figured the fine was going to give them the worst kind of publicity, much worse than a negative review.

British chicken

British chicken

More than half (59%) of British chicken has been found to be contaminated with camphylobacter. The worst thing about it is there are no hard and fast rules about this. One supermarket chain still sold the stuff to the public after they had been advised of the contamination. No laws broken.

Feminism is in danger of becoming toxic, read the headline. Well, I have always considered it toxic. While I have no problem in equal rights for women, I do object to the highly militant practices of the ism, and having it shoved down my throat. And, if I object, I am labelled a mysogynist.

Some exciting news. Netflix will be in Australia and NZ next year. People are fools. Why do they support these monopolies? The whole world has gone crazy. Why do you need to see a film the moment it is released? Generally people piss me off. I wouldn’t pay a company like Netflix. I just wait until the film is downloadable and do so.

Brazil won their freindly game against Austria yesterday, 3-2. I didn’t think I’d see the game because of class, then one student cancelled, then another, then the last… Opened  a bottle of beer and saw the whole game. Some things work out well.

A zookeeper in England has discovered you shouldn’t piss of a rhino. He was found by collegues with serious body injuries in the rhino enclosure.

There’s no way in hell I’d get into a rhino enclosure, at least not together with the rhino.

Well, that about wraps it up.

Now I get a phone call and have to go to town. Poo! There goes my nothing.

Weekendish

betweenSat&SunWith my screwed up Saturdays, Sunday doesn’t really feel like Sunday anymore.

If the powers that be can stuff around with daylight saving, surely they could invent a new weekend day.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who would approve.

Laundry lady came, babbled a lot and went.

While ignoring the banal banter I managed to post, and here I am at the end of the day. It’s only 5pm, but I consider that a Sunday the day ends here.

It’s election day, so no football.

On a Sunday there is nothing but crap on TV from midday until 9pm. then there’s a current affairs programme that sometimes too can be crap, although not always. Sometimes it exposes the nefarious goings ons of politicians, government or criminals… there I go, repeating myself again.

I love the opening of this programme.

Quite ethereal.

I made a huge tray of sushi today and took it to the botequim. I’m getting quite proficient now and it only took me an hour and a half from washing the rice to eating with my first beer. A half dozen of the fregües (regulars) like it and participate and the tray didn’t last long.

So that was my contribution for the day.

I came back home for Nap-fu practice, which I might add was successful.

In my despising daylight savings, it appears that I am not alone. The Russians tried DST as a permanent fixture. But this weekend they are returning to ‘normal’ time for the last time. No more DST.

As there is nothing on TV, and the botequim crowd are people I don’t know, I may see if I can rest, although guilty feelings about the dishes may reign supreme.

Meanwhile, think about that extra day… what would we call a new day between Saturday and Sunday?

Later.

Interrupted… by Beer

Beer Glass

Interrupted by beer

Yes, what a wonderful way to recover from a screwed up Saturday.

Second class didn’t show, so I wetn home.

Crashed until 3pm

Botequim, football and beer.

More football at 9pm, my team, Flamengo.

I’ve just had a snack, ham & parsley omelette.

That’s one of the things I like living alone, you can have breakfast food for a late afternoon snack, and there’s no-one to say “Boo!”

For the footy match later, it’ll probably be pizza and beer. Although a lot depends if Raimundo decides to fire up the BBQ. Plans are fluid at this stage.

So, apart from work, snooze and beer, not a lot has heppened. Life seems a bit of a drag at the mopment.

Brazil has the run-off election for president tomorrow. Also there is a run-ff for governor of Rio state where we have a choice between an idiot and a religious bigot. I have just seen the latest figures, it looks like the idiot will win by 10%. Thank heavens for idiots. In the news just now there was news that the evangelical church where the religious bigot was a bishop has been campaigning inside the church, which is prohibited by law.

Eleven Brazilians in Rio were poisoned by eating badly prepared baiacu (blowfish). This fish is considered the second most poisonour animal in the world. The Japanese eat fugu, but it has to be especially prepared to avoid releasing the toxins.

Pays to know what you’re doing.

Headline news: Queen Elizabeth has tweeted… Wow! #queen

Ebola has surpassed 10,000 cases, and deaths have reached 5,000. It’s not going to go away folks.

It’s getting on time for pizza, beer and football.

I Feel a Bit of a Dill

A dill...

A dill…

A couple of comments yesterday feel that I should do nothing more often.

I would like to. Doing nothing is so relaxing, but I feel that it could be come a permanent affliction.

While it is nice for a change, I do like to be doing something.

I did something today. So it wasn’t a nothing day. I only hope that it doesn’t impair the quality of my post.

It’s another incredibly hot dry day. Knowing that this was to be the case, I watered the plants before they had a chance to wilt.

Then I went to town.

The first thing I bought was a small rosemary seedling. So now I have parsley, sage rosemary and thyme. Love that song.

Then it was off to the ‘sushi’ shop. It’s not actually a sushi shop, but has bulk foods and healthy crap. I got some seaweed, some seasoning, white pepper, sushi rice, and I was taken with a bottle of oyster sauce. I have no idea what it is, or what it tastes like yet, but I’ll experiment. Next I found myself in the street where I was told there was a butchery that sold chorizo (black pudding), I got a kilo (couple of punds). Then I went hunting for a chopping board, I found some, boy they were expensive, R$30 odd. Gave them a miss and bought a new steall serving tray at R$13. Weighed down with my goodies, I went and paid the rent. The morning was wearing on, and at 11am I got a van home.

Unpacked and examined my purchases and had a Nap-fu practice.

Woke at the appointed hour and made lunch. Black pudding, boiled potatoes and cauliflower au gratin. Took that to the botequim to have with a beer and watch the news.

Two hours later, I needed to revisit my Nap-fu exercises, from which I have just woken.

1984Yesterday I read about dystopia. I had heard the word before, but never really knew what it meant. In particular it was in reference to George Orwell’s 1984, the book, and made the comment that such things never happen because they are implausible. How blind can a person be? We are in the middle of 1984 now! Not only that, we have gone beyond the horrors written about by Orwell, and are well on the way to a nuclear war.

I shudder to think about what will happen in the next few years in the Middle East.

Ebola, today in the news Ebola is now in Brazil. A traveller from Guinea arrived in September; 21 days later he was interned yesterday as a suspected Ebola carrier. This hasn’t been confirmed yet, but he is in isolation in Rio and tests are being done. The 78 people that he has had contact with are also under observation. While he has some of the symptoms, but not all, they’re taking no chances. It is spreading. The death rate has now passed 4,000. Britain is furthering the implementation of screening.

The government in Hong Kong called off talks due today, igniting the protests again as thousands take to the streets in peaceful action. The movement has definitely not run out of steam, and the deputy leader has no idea what sh’es doing.

Horrified to read that some schools are removing swings from children’s playgrounds because they are dangerous and can lead to insurance claims. The problem lies with children entering the arc of the swing and being knocked over. Sure there is a danger there. But parents, teachers and caregivers need ot teach the kids how to avoid injury. Hell, if we remove everything that presents a mild threat, we will have kids growing up without a sense of reality. When I was a kid, a bloody knee, a broken collarbone or a bruise was treated the Medal of Honour.

Now I must behave like a teacher.

My first attempt at making makimonos.

The first half dozen

The first half dozen makimonos

Okay, they’re not exactly round, and I couldn’t get them to close off nicely; too much filling.

So I ate the ugly ones, and made some more…

Getting better

Getting better

That’s the platter that went to the botequim. None came back alive; the makimonos that is, not the fregües (regulars)!

They were what we call here in Brazil Filedefia, salmon with cream cheese coloured off with chopped parsley.

Learning curve – I cooked way too much rice; which turned out perfect btw.

Today, I am going to roast off the salmon skin and have a go at making nigris, I hope the rice survived the night in the fridge.

bloodtypeWheee!

This is fun.

I’m addicted to love coffee!

Just made fresh. Had to use yesterday’s leftover first. I hate waste.

Apparently, the Queen does NOT purr, as per David Cameron’s remark when referring to HM’s reaction to the Scots referendum.

He said that he’s embarrassed and apologised to HM for the off hand remark.

HM was not amused. These royals are such a stuffy lot.

notpurrGoogle has been threatened with a $6bn fine if it doesn’t play ball with the European over their methods of prioritising search results. Google is just too big for its boots.

Nasty little buggers

Aedes aegypti – Nasty little buggers

Two bits of news from Brazil. First Brazil refused to sign the deforestation pact; the blonde bimbo was miffed that the world didn’t consult Brazil when making the draft.

Secondly, Brazilian researchers have turned the Aedes aegypti mosquito against itself. That’s the one that causes dengue fever which can be fatal. They’ve got a bacteria that turns the second generation sterile; so reducing the breeding population.

Reports show that where the mosquitoes have been released in other parts of the world there has been a 30% reduction in numbers.

Shellshock! There is another new bug out there. According the report Heartbleed affected 500,000 pcs, this new one has a potential reach of 5 million. And what’s worse, is that where Heartbleed was a sniffer, Shellshock allows the machine to be controlled. It is aimed at Macs and Linux… You can read about it on BBCNews.

TEASER-Barack-Obama-coffee-cup-saluteThe Latte Salute… Obama is in the poo again. Returning a military salute with a Starbucks cup in his right hand. The disrespect caused a bit of a ruckus on Twitter.

Watched football last night. Flamengo vs São Paulo 2-2, so am tired today.

I’m off to unwilt my plants, by then it will be time for Nap-fu practice.

Short day today, lessons start at 4pm.

Based on the old threepence

Based on the old threepence

No, I’m not fitting counters this side of next birthday.

Although I have had two coffees this morning and already made a thermos full for the remainder, I still feel pre-Coffee, which explains why I have a ciggy in one ashtray, and have just lit another…

The Bank of England has called for designs for a new pound coin to be minted to foil counterfeiters. Apparently it’s cheaper than having their own designer paid for by the public coffers. In calling for submissions, they want something that typically identifies England.

The new design is based on the old 12-sided threepence, which people are already refering to a ‘thrupny’ bit.

Typically English… what could be more typical than a pint?

Here’s my idea.

A pint in colour, that'll fool the counterfeiters

So far this morning, I haven’t trusted myself to post on any of my blogs. I have busied myself in emptying my mail box and checking out new posts on those I follow. Having said that, my Thunderbird has just gone beep beep bop, telling me that my efforts have been in vain, and there is now more mail… the wheel turns.

While waiting for inspirration to strike, I have just realised it’s MONDAY!

Something has to happen

Something has to happen

Now as well as waiting for inspiration, I have the added worry of what can go wrong today… Which in turn reminded that the rent is due today. Now that in itself is not a problem, I have the rent, but I have to get into town to pay it; that requires motivation.

Now, I am waiting for inspiration AND motivation.

I think I need more coffee.

Back…

Oh, that’s wonderful!

The dams are dry, sorry too late

The dams are dry, sorry too late

In recent months Brazil has undergone a severe water shortage, particularly in the state of São Paulo. A report in the news this morning is rather disturbing. It appears that deforestation of the Amazon basin has reached a threshhold The vegetation of the Amazon basin let moisture rise and so produce the clouds that moved across the country and fell as rain. Apparently, there is not enough vegetation left to make suffcient moisture to form the necessary clouds. Brazil’s inaction, or insufficient action, has caused their own demise. Had the country been more prudent earlier, we wouldn’t have these drought problems. Another example of man’s inability to husband the planet effectively.

I should move along, blogs are calling, posts are begging to be written and Thunderbird is telling me there is more mail.

Got Too Physical

Funny-meme-Monday-will-be-over-soonAnd, now I am suffering. I’ve got a sore back, all that carpentry over the weekend, and again this morning. I made a new shelf for under the kitchen sink. It even hurts to reach over the keyboard. So this post comes with suffering, blood, sweat and tears.

Nothing much to report, my student rang, she’s left her books at home, so the lesson is cancelled for today… Pheeew!

Been sunny up till now, it’s just darkened. We had a change of weather yesterday with a lot of wind and a little rain over night.

Just finished lunch. Slapdash! Slapped some chicken cubes in the pot, sloshed in some mustard and soya sauce, diced up some celery and cooked some rice. Done!

I mentioned that our street had new carpet.

newcarpet

New carpet

Originally it was parallelapipados (cobblestones), and looked like this.

cobblestones

Cobblestones

But they got patchy and it was a mess. It was also a natural traffic barrier, and most cars passed carefully. Now that is nice and smooth, they think they’re Formula 1 drivers. This is making it dangerous for the kids crossing to the praça. Our stretch is particularly notorious for kids crossing without looking.

Ellen Suelen, my stepdaughter used to do this…

Ellen Suelen sitting in a tree, k.i.s.s.i.n.g, NO eating guava!

Mum could never find the paring knife, any wonder.

Now she’s grown up, she doesn’t sit in the tree wearing just her panties anymore. But when she arrived on Saturday for the BBQ, first thing she did was to pull down a branch of my tree and pluck off a couple of guava.

Ellen Suelen doesn't sit in the guava tree anymore

Ellen Suelen doesn’t sit in the guava tree anymore

Mum tells me there is another problem, boys are hanging off the gate by the dozen drooling teenage hormones.

*Dad oils up the shotgun*

No need really, Ellen’s opinion of boys is that they’re a hinderance.

A few years ago our blonde bimbo president said that Brazil was protected from the decline in the global economy after the 2008 crash. At the time I cried bullshit! Last quarter Brazil went into a recession… and guess what? The blonde bimbo is blaming the global decline. I had to laugh.

Looks like she won’t be president for much longer. With the death of Eduardo Campos in the plane crash and Marina da Silva stepping into his shoes, her party went from struggling to make double figures in the polls 8, 9, 10% to 34% within a week; which puts her dead level with the incumbent.

Mine's not that bad!

Mine’s not that bad!

I am all for Marina, she’s probably the most honest politician in Brazil. But I have misgivings about her being an evangelical, therefore against abortion and same sex marriage. She could take Brazil backward in these areas.

It doesn’t particularly concern me, I’m not about to have an abortion (it’s a beer belly), nor am I about to marry a bloke.

But she is right on the ball to make Brazil the greenest country in the world, and she’s no slug went it comes to the economy either.

I see that celebrities are concerned after nude photos were leaked from cloud storage sites. Confirming my opinion that cloud storage is a disaster waiting to happen and  isn’t safe. If they don’t want their nudes photos spread across the planet, don’t take them.

A Briton has been jailed for six years after killing the arsehole that stole his son’s iPhone at knife point. The father went looking for him armed with a knife, and after being blinded by the assailant’s knife in one eye, he stabbed him. While this wasn’t the correct way to resolve the matter, he should have called the police. But I am of the opinion that the world is one arsehole less. Turns out he had ten previous armed assaults, he should never have been on the streets; he was too dangerous. No sympathy from this quarter.

Here’s my parting shot for the day!

‘Half of state school teachers face pupil aggression’ Headlines from BBC News.

This situation has been getting progressively worse, and it will not stop here.

Kick the aggressors out of the school system, don’t give them benefits, they shit in their own nest; make them realise that. Make them labour for their living, if they turn to crime, lock the door and throw away the key.

Grumpy old bastard, aren’t I?

Ah, that’s a rhetorical question.

Camembert at Midnight

MidnightWith the beginning of the political campaign for the Brazilian presidential and governorial elections in October, I am really screwed up.

Well, more than normal.

Free Bullshit

Free Bullshit

Nightly on TV we are subjected to an hour of obligatory electoral brainwashing propaganda. Right in the middle of the evening, 8:15 – 9:15, you can’t escape it, it’s on all channels.

As I mentioned yesterday, I switch the TV off.

Which means by the time I have done my nightly rounds, emails, comment replies, a last glance through the news that I am ready for bed an hour earlier.

All this means that I am up for my early morning pee before midnight!

Howling with the bats at the moon

Howling with the bats at the moon

I feel as though I should be out in the yard howling at the moon.

We have the bats in the praça.

Instead, I had the last of my Camembert and began writing.

camembertOh, wonderful Camembert.

All of this leaves me totally disorientated as I sit here bleary-eyed yearning for more sleep, but knowing full well, that any attempt to return to the land of slumber will be fraught with disappointment.

The clock has ticked on, the midnight hour passed. It is now Friday.

Now that I have taken my spleen for a walk, I shall return to the pit from whence I came.

I urge all Brazilians to turn off your TVs, show the damned politicians that we don’t want their political bullshit.

politicalpromisesLater, I promse.

The weather took a turn

It was forecast, but yesterday as I left for work, the heavens opened. I got halfway there and got soaked, so I came back home and rang my student, moved the lesson to Friday.

Rained all night.

Today, I have been curled up in bed between posts. Huddled under a blanket in my woolly sweat pants and two t-shirts.

My Nap-fu practice, is normally flop on the bed in my underpants, quite inelegant, which is why I have never taken a selfie. But today there was no ‘flopping’ rather a slow crawling lethargic roll to get under the blanket.

I cleaned it

I cleaned it

Yesterday, Posted a picture of my bule (coffeepot).

I was quite shamed by its state, so ashamed in fact that last night I spent 20 minutes scrubbing it.

Today it sits there almost gleaming.

I have been reading some posts recently about tea drinking and the associated benefits, also some of the comments received have alluded to the tea drinking habits of the British.

Since yesterday, I have been drinking tea; black tea without suger, which is how I prefer it.

Sorry, doesn’t cut the mustard.

This afternoon I am back on coffee; that mug of liquid sanity.

The latest member of my entourage.

skinnytortoiseshellA scrawny tortoiseshell.

She’s from the same household as Kitty. I have no idea what her name is, but she has taken a liking to me. Or is it the cat food she has taken a liking to?

She’s more friendly than Kitty and jumps up willingly on the sofa for a petting.

She’s got a long skinny rats tail, but I like my cats with big fluffy tails, like Cloro and Clorinha.

My yesterday’ post about the chages to WP posting page got misunderstood. I like the changes, but being faced with them at 1:30am without coffee was rather daunting. For those of you reading, if you have had problems with the post preview, it’s probably because you have pop-ups blocked; like me. The preview now comes as a pop-up page. I don’t know why they fixed it, the new tab was working fine. My philosophy is if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. I still want to know what a ‘slug’ is (found under advanced setting).

They say the internet is full. There is a likelyhood of it shutting down.

Is the internet ‘full’ and are we in for a rocky ride over the next few weeks? Photograph: Alamy Click the image if you want the BBCNews about this

That’s a worry, if the internet shuts down, I’ll have to do other things, like the dishes…

ISPs with old equipment are already being affected. Hence the FB outage a week or so ago.

Mind you, FB wouldn’t be a great loss.

But the mind boggles at the thought of a blogless world.

Here in Brazil, we received a shock yesterday. Eduardo Campos, one of the presidential hopefuls for this year’s elections in October, was killed in a plane crash. There are six serious candidates, Campos and Aércio Neves were the two choices in my mind. The other four, include a slovenly disinterested cuss, a slime ball, an ex-evangelical preacher who is crawling up the collective religious asshole and the blonde bimbo incumbent; who was top of the pops. I am hopeful that Campos’ followers will migrate to Neves and knock the blonde bimbo off her perch.

The whole dynamic of October has been thrown into disarray.

I must get organised. Fifteen minutes before I am due to leave for class. At least it isn’t raining so I should get there dry and cold.

That Funky Monkey

Thi, apprently, is a Funky Monkey

This, apprently, is a Funky Monkey

Yes, that funky monkey again.

Last night was brass monkey weather, even more so than the previous day and night.

Not often I have to resort to a blanket on the bed here in Rio, but last night it was essential.

MWPG left a comment about a brass monkey, it’s a Beastie Boy’s song. That’s where the post title came from… Funky Monkey was in the song.

Now, I have heard of the Beastie Boys, but never consciously listened, nor even knew any of their songs. Having now heard the Beastie Boys, I am in no doubt as to why. The cacophony was so painful that I had to switch it off and look up the lyrics to find the connection alluded to by MWPG.

I’m sorry MWPG, but there are some things that should just be put out of their misery.

I am a wiser man today.

I noted the other day (WordPress report) that this blog has 696 followers, wow, great. But as I only get at most 16 likes (that’s a new record) for the posts… I am left wondering what the rest of you are doing with your left hands as you scroll through my words with the right. Because you are certainly not using it to press the ‘Like’ button! I know some of my posts have sex, and some are even perverse, but stop doing that… you’ll go blind.

Why do people complicate simple things? I hit a page yesterday that perpetuated the myth that brass monkeys losing their balls was a reference to testicles. redxcloseIt was a Brazilian blog in Portuguese, I wrote a reply in my best Portuguese handwriting, and then discovered that I had to go through a series of painful contortions in order to post the comment, couldn’t be bothered, so I hit the big red X.

I see that Israel is hell-bent on genocide again. Netanyahu is using this latest round of rockets from Gaza as his excuse. The few rockets that Palestinians are capable of sending does not warrant the sledgehammer tactics being used to annihilate a whole people. And they are looking at getting a bigger hammer. Despite lip-service to the peace protest, Netanyahu is just not interested in peace, he will settle for nothing but extermination.

After the cold night, the sun is out, the washing is on the line and today is the final of the world cup. Then the world can return to normal.

Now if Argentina put this team in the field, would the Germans even be worried about the ball?

Ball, what ball?

Ball, what ball?

What a Messi that would be!

The game yesterday showed that the Brazilian team is getting better again; only three goals against instead of seven. That’s more than a 50% improvement.

I still think the silly hats should win.

Or perhaps FIFA could hold a facing-painting cup…

fans_2936689b

And… the prize goes to the man in the rolled gold trilby and transparent head! Quote from the Goon Show.

I see a suggestion that surfing should become an Olympic sport, why not face-painting? The ancient Greeks would roll in their graves.
