Sushi Me - my future

Sushi Me – my future

Well, the process has started.

The sushification of AV!

I was up most of the night watching YouTubes on making sushi, which I discovered means vinegared rice, what we commonly call sushi is actually nigri… there ya go; learn something everyday.

Actually, I knew that nigri were called that, I didn’t know what sushi meant. And I already knew about makimonos, gari, wasabi and stuff, but nori (seaweed) was new to me as well.

I also learned how to cook the ‘perfect’ Japanese rice, all that remains now is to see if I can make it perfectly.

I also learned that ‘sushi grade’ fish is bullshit. What they mean is really fresh fish. Calling it sushi grade is just a reason to double the price…

After a few more videos, I reckon I’ll be ready to experiment when I can afford the makings.

More rain over night, but the sky is clearing this morning. Still cool with the slightest zephyr of wind, just enough to make the leaves on my guava trees move. Not brave enough to venture outside shirtless yet. I’m old, not silly!

I haven’t really read the news yet, so I don’t know what’s happening or happened in the world….

*pregnant pause* while I read the news.

Lots of protests about climate change. 10,000s of Russians took to the streets over Russia’s interference in Ukraine, demanding that ‘he who shall not be named’ tell the truth. Venezuela is going to disarm the people… idiot. Miley Cyrus has upset the Mexicans, now that doesn’t surprise me, she’s always upset me. Hong Kong students are boycotting classes in protest at China’s refusal to grant them democracy. New Zealand now wants a new flag vote in 2015. Abbott Idiot syas that security comes before Australian freedoms; he’s been listening to too much Obama. Apart from all that, the planet is still headed for disaster.

Nap-fu Master gets grumpy if he doesn't practice

Nap-fu Master gets grumpy if he doesn’t practice

I am about to make breakfast, shrimp fritters.

By the time I have done that it will be time for Nap-fu practice.

And get up in time for lunch.

Then I’ll be ready to face what’s left of the day.

I have absolutely nothing planned, so it should go smoothly, despite being a Monday.

I might add, that so far nothing untoward has befallen me this day… yet.

A Loathing

Yes, I loathe selfies; hate them with a passion.

Even more so now.

Having had my hair and beard cut that morning, it added a touch of the demented

Having had my hair and beard cut that morning, it added a touch of the deranged

Last night in class we were discussing my new cellphone. I had earlier in the day bought a new SIM card and inserted same. I had verified that the camera now worked, but hadn’t actually taken a photo. My students, an accountant and a logistics supervisor, both of whom should know better, convinced me that traditionally, one takes a selfie to prove the camera works.

I took a selfie.

True to form, it made me look like a criminal, to make matters worse, I had chosen to wear an orange T-shirt which only served to highlight my potential criminality.

All this merely confirms my loathing.

Never again.

Late start today. 12:45 and I’ve just finished a bacon and egg breakfast.

It began raining last night, and is forecast to  continue until Tuesday or Wednesday.

Just had a double power surge and had to restart PC. These are Monday things, not for a Friday. I was lucky, autosave saved what I had so far. I so loathe it when I lose writing.

I was up during the night, yes, playing with my cellphone. Give a kid a new toy and…

I had removed the SIM card to download the criminal photo, and the battery fell out, so I had to reset everything again.

This is now my wallpaper.

Suits the 'fire orange' them of my cellphone

Suits the ‘fire orange’ them of my cellphone

My late start was due to the rain and very cool temps. It’s not underwear weather. I am in T-shirt and brushed cotton pants to stave off the cold.

Clorinha took one look at me an wondered why I had so much fur on, then went back to sleep on the sofa.

The plant I posted yesterday is apparently a Beefsteak (Perilla frutescens) plant, thank you to MWPG identifying it for me.

fartA suggestion in comments, that in order to combat global  flatulence, we should cull humans. I quite agree, there are far too many of us.

I didn’t actually get to the supermarket yesterday. The ATM had remembered how to money, so I paid the rent, by that time I was close to lunch in both space and time. Snap decision…

Caught the restaurant out falsifying food. They had sole fillets listed on the buffet… yum. When I cut into the first one it was pink inside. Sole doesn’t have colour. They were passing off panga (R$9/kg) as sole (R$28/kg). The manager wasn’t aware and gave the kitchen a bollocking for putting the restaurant at risk of a heavy fine. Our consumer protection, ProCon, just love to dish out R$10,000 fines for this type of infraction. The manager thanked me for the information, but he didn’t go as far as offering a free lunch.

Also, I loathe panga. Panga is a Vietnamese export. Raised in the Mekong River Delta which is the sewer of South East Asia and they fill it with hormones to grow quicker.

No, I was practising my Nap-fu

After which I went home to practice my Nap-fu.

Big steel birds seem to be falling out of the sky somewhat regularly, shot down, hi-jacked, sand storm have taken their toll in recent months.

Israel is on the path to succeeding in their planned genocide of the Palestinians. I hope that if and when the last Palestinian falls that the UN, Britain and the USA are taken to book for giving Palestine to the Israelis in the first place. They started it. It has become obviously aware that Israel will not stop until Gaza is gone.

I have a heap of posting to do today, so I should really blog along.

I will leave you all with my loathings for the day and go and make more coffee.

The Biter Bit

I have a half hour before the kickoff between Argentina and Nigeria at 1pm.

There is no doubt that Suarez applied his infamous bite - Mage: BBCNews

There is no doubt that Suarez applied his infamous bite – Image: BBCNews

The title, of course, refers to Suarez’ bite of the Italian. I don’t follow European football and I was unaware that this is not the first time, nor the second time that he has committed this despicable act, but the THIRD! Leaving me even more shocked. The first offence he was banned for six games, the second, ten games. This time she should be banned from the sport for LIFE!

I saw the footage during the game, the video leaves no doubt that he did it regardless of his claims that he was ‘shouldered’ by the Italian is bullshit; it was nothing of the sort. And history tells us that he did indeed bite him, as he has committed an impressively nefarious list of infractions including unsportsmanship, handing the ball, racial abuse, as well as the two previous bites; all of which have lead to sanctions.

We don’t need animals like this in sport!

FIFA is investigating…. there’s NOTHING to investigate!

The biter bit title comes from a high school English class. I can’t remember the context, I believe something to do with poetry, but it was so appropriate.

Today is a holiday here in Rio because of the game at Maracanã, I had a morning planned.

Make fresh coffee

Bacon & Eggs for breakfast

Bog and shower

Replace the shelf under the kitchen sink

So far, I have made the coffee and had a bog…

You can see that I have taken the route of least resistance, although the bog… No, I’ll spare you the details.

The shelf under the kitchen sink remains, disintegrating, under the sink.

Bacon & Eggs are now planned for lunch along with a weinerschnitzel steak.

An eternity waiting

An eternity waiting

My PC was sluggish, it was taking forever for anything to happen, although in reality the time could’ve been measured in seconds. When you’re at the keyboard, that’s an eternity.

Even FireFox was having hiccoughs.

Not surprising, it’s been on 24/7 for the last 12 days.

So, I shut everything down, and rebooted.

I searched for a reboot funny/humour image without success, and apparently there is nothing funny about having to reboot your PC.

The US has upset Kim Jong-un. He’s threatening war over a movie portrayal of him. Geez, he’s a dork!

Nice day out there, already passed kick off, and Messi has already scored.

I’m off to cook breakfast lunch.

A Meal without Wine…

MealWithoutWine0I read a post yesterday entitled How to make Breakfast Exciting.

My immediate thought was, add wine! Inspired by the saying on the right.

I have just had a peek in my fridge; I found the following: eggs, bacon, mushroom. In the vege stand there are tomatoes, and in the cupboard a jar of asparagus.

It is time for my midday nap. I am planning breakfast. No, I haven’t had breakfast yet, so far my day has been powered by coffee, but I am running on empty.

Sunday breakfast… bacon and eggs, stewed tomatoes, grilled mushrooms and asparagus on toast with oodles of pepper…. and wine!

MUSCAT-OTTONEL-DRYIn response to my post a couple of days ago, it was suggested that I try “Dobrogean Muscat Ottonel… white, divine nectar. Just don’t go over, the hangover lasts at least two days”. I had to google Dobrogean Muscat Ottonel and discovered that it is a Romanian wine.

The chances of finding that here in Brazil would be akin to finding rocking horse poo. Couldn’t find that particular brand, Dobrogean, but I assume this is similar; also most certainly not to be found in Brazil. So I will improvise, with a wine that doesn’t produce a two-day hangover.

Sundays are normally boring, but with a little imagination, scraps from the fridge, you can turn it around.

I hate screw top wines. I chanced the other day to find an Australian wine, when I got home I further discovered that this wine had one of those infernal screw tops; if I had seen that in the supermarket, it would have gone back on the shelf.

My blogs are still on the decline. I know, I am whinging… Five of my eight blogs reularly topped 1,000 hits a month, last month that had dropped to two blogs leaping over this formidible barrier, this month, one blog may just stumble over 1,000 hits, may be not.

New Zealand had another moderately severe earthquake yesterday; a 6.9. This one was in Wellington, rather than Christchurch which has been largely flattened by the 2011 & 2012 shakes in which over 100 died.

Time for nap.

Later.

Which brings me to this point

CastlePointLagoon

Castle Point Lagoon

AH, but which point? You may well ask.

No, not Castle Point in New Zealand, pretty and idyllic though it is; nor am I stalking about PowerPoint, nor indeed an exclamation point.

Neither am I referring to pointing a gun, nor point blank (although the ‘blank’ bit referring to my mind is a possiblility – that’s why I am waffling until inspiration strikes).

I am referring to a point in time.

Point in Time - image: David Middlebrook

Point in Time – image: David Middlebrook

“Paleolithic fossils help us determine points in time. The scale of this replica of the sacred Egyptian “Ibis” bird skull is referring to a possible future point in time. The balancing block of basalt was formed in the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago when the last great extinction of the dinosaurs took place. The lone survivors became the birds of today”… – Read more

Yes, this particular point in time is nearly 10am and this is the last blog post of the day.

I have surpassed myself, I have excelled, I have… well, I have.

Saturdays are often an easy blog-load, because there is not a lot of thinking, rather it is choosing. Finding images and ideas that suit the Satireday on theme on most blogs, ideas that are both satire and/or funny, and that suit the general theme of each blog. On Nether Region, it is always Caturday, and I collect cat LOLs and Memes throughout the week during my browsing. Whatever keywords you put in a search engine, you are almost guaranteed there is a ‘cat’ image somewhere along the line.

So now that I have completed my blogging obligations, I should, begrudgingly, look after the house. I could start with the dishes, but the use of ‘could’ denotes a certain level of unwillingness, or improbability; and that’s how I feel about the dishes.

I may (strong possibility) cook bacon and eggs for breakfast, now that’s a good idea. It does have a drawback though, it creates more dishes, which take me back to the ‘could’ dilemma.

Life is a vicious circle.

Here’s an example of a vicious circle…

See what I mean?

cachaca_51The bacon and egg idea appeals, because it may be (strong possibility again) beer o’clock by then.

But then I have to spend money, which I don’t have much of this month…

Another vicious circle!

I will probably (stronger possibility than ‘may’) put a bottle of wine in the freezer and take that to the bar when suitably chilled. Or I might (weaker possibility) make a caipirinha and take that to the bar, but they have a propensity to get one plastered, not  prospect that I enjoy.

Despite the most popular brand of cachaça (sugar cane brandy) being 51, which is synonymous (because of a TV ad) with being a good idea. Drinking it before the sun is over the yard arm is most certainly NOT a good idea. Because a caipirinha doesn’t last long, and then you need another, and….

See, yet another vicious circle.

Caipirinha mit Limonen

Even the German site I got this image from says ‘Limetten‘ (lime) It’s bullshit!

A caipirinha is very much like a women’s breasts…. one is not enough! They really are so yummy, if they’re made properly with green lemons.

AH, I hear you all, “green lemons are limes!” No, they are not! This, sadly, is an American supposition; if it’s green then it’s a lime, because lemons are yellow. Lemons are sour, limes are sweeter. Here in Brazil, we have green lemons, and it is those green lemons that are used in a caipirinha. The net is full of this erroneous idea that a caipirinha is made with limes. If you make use limes in a caipirinha recipe, or indeed any other fruit, it then becomes a batida, which is NOT a caipirinha!

This is a pet hate of mine on the internet. Along with Brazilian waiters, who should know better, asking if I want a caipirinha made with cachaça or vodka. If it’s made with vodka, then it is a caipivodka, or caipiroska. If I wanted one, I’d ask for it!

It’s now heading towards eleven, a good hour to have breakfast on the weekend.

So I will leave you with this thought, it’s hard being an English teacher, you know too much about the language; sometimes I yearn for the days when I could write without having to justify (to myself) the use of modal verbs.

Later.

I thought about it…

bacon-and-eggs

I lacked half the ingredients

Yes, I thought about bacon and eggs for breakfast, but I lacked half the ingredients, eggs. So that idea went by the board.

So I had coffee, blogged and a nap.

Hamburgers for lunch, cheese bacon and mushroom, yum yum.

Brazilian restaurants are racing against time. Next week the Confederations Cup begins, then in 2014 FIFA World Cup. This means that there are going to be a lot of visitors who have no notion of Portuguese; and waiters who have similar ideas about English, em passe. Some restaurants are getting their menus translated, some have recruited English teachers, and some have had their fare loaded onto tablets with translation facilities and images of the food.

This is picanha, alcatra, contra-file, etc

This is picanha, alcatra, contra-file, etc

One restaurant has the novel idea of stuffed animals.

The customer doesn’t know, the waiter can’t explain, he simply shows a stuffed cow for beef.

They even have a stuffed Kermit, because carne da rã (frog portions) is popular here and many restaurants serve it.

Cooler today, I haven’t tried to turn the sun off… there is no sun, somebody beat me to it.

The Americans have finally found a civilised use for drones instead of bombing the shit out of Pakistan and such places…

Done a Bunk

Mean green leaf eating machine

My Mean Green Leaf Eating Machine has done a bunk. He’s AWOL. I have just spent the best part of the last hour scrutinising the other guava plants in my garden with an intense ‘scrute’, but he remains on the MIA list. I last saw him yesterday afternoon; he was on duty devastating yet another branch like any responsible MGLEM and now ‘poof!’ he’s gone quicker than a magicians rabbit.

I suspect his gluttony has got the better of him and he’s gone into hiding for his chrysalis stage, but where? I want to see him do it. Maybe MGLEMs like to do it in private, rather like a teenager in the bathroom.

My experimental chilling of my nuts last night was a success, cold nuts and cold beer what a great combination for watching football, even if Paraguay did win 2-1. I heartily recommend you chill your nuts.

I have been watching a few ads on TV lately and two things have pissed me off. Firstly, the car ads, they all show you how to wreck a car or drive dangerously in true macho style. With the rising death tolls in every country despite laws that are designed to lower the deaths on our roads, I find this extremely irresponsible of the car manufacturers. All the driver education programmes around the globe are undermined by TV advertising.

Just take a look at this ad, banned in Australia, teaching your kids to run away, break the law…

Secondly, brainwashing ads for Easter eggs; when Easter is over, brainwashing ads for Mother’s Day; when Mother’s Day is over, brainwashing ads for Valentines Day… the shit never ends.

Well, after my day off on Tuesday, my students cancelled yesterday, today is Corpus Christi, tomorrow is Friday… I have a one-day work week and a six-day weekend.

Started off well this morning, the quintessential coffee, the dishes, then a traditional Kiwi mince on hot buttered toast for breakfast.

Must blog along… Only had a rant on Genes about rosaries and ovaries so far and it’s nearly lunchtime.

Debauchery

bellosToscanaYesterday morning’s breakfast at the botequim

Cold roast pork sandwiches, washed down with the remains of the bottle of Italian Bellosguardo Rosso Toscana while nibbling on offered BBQ’d pieces and chicken wings from the BBQ that was in progress.

Does that sound debauched?

I don’t care really about your opinion, it was a rhetorical question after all. My opinion… was yummy!

What a wonderful way to begin a sunny Sunday when there was not a lot else going on.

The fregües (regulars) at the botequim are often bemused by my antics, none the less yesterday. Noises like, “O AV sabe como vivir” (AV knows how to live) and “Ele  não beba vinhos ruins” (He doesn’t drink plonk” were amongst those to be heard.

Of course, I offered them to share my wine, but Brazilians don’t generally drink dry wines, and this was a tart cab sav.

Lixosleeping

Looks so damned innocent, just bit the hand that feeds me…

Lixo bit me. Yes, the first time he has drawn blood. Sitting in the praça on Saturday night, he jumped up on to the bench for a pet, as he is want to do then he lay down and sunk his teeth into my left wrist.

Once I managed to wrest my wrist from the fangs of the demon feline monster, I became the loving devoted father when faced with an errant son and gave him a sound cuff under the ear and went home nursing my ego as much as my bleeding wrist.

After breakfast yesterday, I found an amazing creature. I found a caterpillar. Now normally caterpillars are cutesy things and don’t usually warrant much attention, but this one did. I stood transfixed as this beast gnawed his way through the leaves on my goiaba branca (white guava) tree like a combine harvester.

Mean green leaf eating machine

Apparently he is the caterpillar of one of the many hawk moth species; a fact that google assures me is a high probability.

An amazing 4+inches of green destruction. Big enough that he could have gone on the BBQ grill as a green sausage.

He’s still there this morning gnawing away happily when I put trimmings out on the compost.

I am leaving him to wend his trail of destruction because I am curious, I hope to catch him during his metamorphosis from the Hulk to elegance.

I am also hoping to capture the process on film… Now there’s a point, in the past you ‘captured something on film’ but today there is no film. The last roll of Kodak has come and gone; should we not change that ‘to capture him on a chip’? Do we now ‘SD’ something rather than ‘film’ it?

You see the problem with the language now? The problems that I face being grammar police’? Is ‘capturing something on film’ going to remain with us as one of those linguistic dinosaurs?

Screwed

Screwed!

Problems beset us daily, riddles, enigmas and conundra. Things that cause us to stop and think or worry about. Many of them seem inconsequential, but they all are a part of us, our lives.

Take my comment above, for example. ‘The caterpillar was happily gnawing…’ Do caterpillars really feel ‘happy’ when they are wreaking such havoc? Do caterpillars have emotions? Does he ask stupid questions like man, ‘why am I here?’ There is just so much that you won’t find on Wikipedia.

If we stop thinking we are screwed. If we think about them too much, we are screwed.

It’s Monday, whatever we do today, at some stage we will be screwed.

So much screwing going on, I think it It is time for more coffee.

Later.

Breakfast at Noon

Queensberry-Classic-Laranja-320gYes, BREAKFAST!

I have had various cups of coffee, but between napping and procrastinating I have omitted to eat anything.

I am in the process of remedying that situation now. The grill is on to make toast.

Challenge met!

There is no breakfast quite like marmalade on toast.

Here, they call it geleia de laranja (orange jam). Brazilians don’t have the concept of marmalade, although this is imported, and horrendously expensive (R$9.98 a jar), there is no word that equates to marmalade. Not to be confused with mermelada in Spanish which means jam and not maramalade.

Having a late breakfast is rather fortuitous today, as I have nothing for lunch. I got fish at the supermarket on Monday night, but I didn’t take it out to thaw. The fact that the supermarket was crowded, I forgot to get anything else edible, except chocolate. One shouldn’t have chocolate for breakfast. Which is as good a reason as any to have lunch out tomorrow when I go shopping with my ex and Emmylee for school stuff.

I was surprised by a comment today on yesterday’s post. Who or what is a Bieber, pray?

JBA Beiber is having the unfortunate condition where ones singing enchants young adolescent girls whose hearts throb at the very mention of his name.

Quite frankly, he is the nadir of singer wanna-bes who are under the delusion that they can sing. Which is supported by the fact that only immature adolescent girls (mainly) consider he can.

I was under the impression that everyone knew who Bieber was, even if only to avoid anything supposedly musical connected with his name. But apparently, not in Hong Kong. Oh the bliss of living in a place where Bieber is unknown.

The fridge saga… Yes, once again the best laid plans of mice and men went awry. During the day the availability of the pick-up disappeared. Now we have set Thursday as the day.

The nuts and bolts of blogging

The nuts and bolts of blogging

I am worried. I keep an eye on my stats for the blogs, and since the weekend they have been way down. My best two blogs Nether Region of the Earth III and Things that Fizz & Stuff are down from 150+ visits per day to 32 and 61 respectively, and that reflects for Mondays (normally the best day of the week) stats too. Eco-Crap, while not the best, is the only blog still swimming with the current. It makes me woonder if I am doing something wrong when I see dips like that. Blogging is not without its frustrations.

Later.

Sun, BBQ & Beer

Yes, that’s the order of the day.

Today is Denise’s birthday BBQ at the botequim (local bar) which is all off 11 metres from my gate. I have no idea how old she is, and I am far too much of a gentleman to ask; there are few enough of us left.

Saturday… apart from the BBQ I have planned to do nothing today. I fully suspect to be successful. Success = happiness.

Last night one of my novelas (soap operas) finished. Aquele Beijo (That Kiss). It is being replaced with a horrendous gaudy social mess, one that I will not be watching. In fact between the regional news and the main news the TV will be off, saving power. I tend to do that, especially during the obligatory political bullshit that is on most nights on every channel; I save 10 minutes of power.

Stupid Freakin' Robots on BBB

I forgot to mention that Big Brother Brazil has finished.

So that is one more lot of TV tripe that I have to avoid.

Honestly, these (un)reality shows are so bloody stupid, I am amazed that people watch them. Anybody with half a brain can see that they are beyond stupid… which makes me wonder if the people who watch them even have half a brain.

Brazil took a major step into the 21st century this week. The Supreme Justice Tribunal approved the regulation that women who are diagnosed as pregnant with an ancephalitic baby can opt for an abortion. Brazil is a very catholic country and as such believes the church can control people’s lives through the law. So this is a major breakthrough for Brazilian women.

Hops make wonderful juice

The music has started…

I do believe it is beer o’clock, again. I had my breakfast ham sandwiches with juice (hops juice) at the botequim this morning.

Sometimes my youth shines through my dotage; although I am past the days where I put beer on my cornflakes.

Have a nice day folks, I will.
