I am Incorrigible

Oh, you knew that already.

I’m also very tired.

My neighbour came home at 2am. Know how I know that? He made a lot of noise putting his car in the carport outside my open bedroom window.

Pfffff!

I wasn’t going to go back to sleep easily. Remember I had a long Nap-fu practice earlier.

Clorinha with me in the praça on a sunnier day last week.

Clorinha with me in the praça on a sunnier day last week.

I made coffee. It was the only sensible thing to do. That was about when I realised that Clorinha wasn’t home…

The last I saw of her was when I went to the pizza shop to complain about the soggy chips (French fries). She always follows me. On the way home she made a detour to inspect the rubbish on the corner; it was rubbish night.

I left her, as she normally comes back home sooner or later.

So what does one do at 2am with coffee? Check emails, comments, notifications, etc. Doing so I found a great WP Theme, which generated an idea. At first I tried it on Eco-Crap, but it fidn’t dit. So I returned Eco-Crap to normal.

lovesscratchesBut there was still this idea lurking, niggling, frustrating me.

The old story, if you’ve got an itch, scratch it.

I began scratching.

The result is a new blog. What’s left of my life. It’s a photo blog. I hope to post a daily photo from my files of photos that I have taken as I cruised around South America before settling back here in Rio, and then my photos from here as well.

I got back to bed at 5:30.

I have two experimental posts up, and I may add another one later. I also have three followers, and likes. They were up before I had finished adding the widgets.

The rain, well yes… It’s still nut numbingly cold.  I am going to change out of these woolly pants and put woollier ones on. The plants are just loving the rain, they’re all bright and green and perky; and there’s new fronds unfurling on the samambaia (ferns).

I’ve lost my rubber!

This is NOT a rubber, it's a condom

This is NOT a rubber, it’s a condom

Now, that’s going to confuse the crap out of my American readers. Why does a nearly 63 year old need a rubber? Hey, it still works you know. My youngest, Emmylee, is only seven!

For me a rubber is an eraser (Americanese), I want to rub out a note I made during the night, it’s no longer needed.

I see that England are suggesting that the next FIFA World Cup be taken off the Russians as a sanction for the downing of the French airliner, the annexation of Crimea and arming the insurgents in the Ukraine. IMHO, that’s fitting. Really Putin’ someone’s nose out of joint, hurting him where it hurts most, right in the pride. But Septic Blathermouth and those weak-kneed arseholes at FIFA said there are no plans to shift the venue. Grow some balls you bastards!

I haven’t read the news yet, so not much to comment on.

Not that much to do really, I got most of my posts done in the early hours while I was formulating how to scratch that itch.

So I will let Sunday roll along and go with the flow.

Later.

 UPDATE

Clorinha came home, meowing from the gate, cold and hungry 24 hours exactly from when I last saw her. First thing she did was bite me, now that’s love…

A brass monkey

A brass monkey and balls

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not bathing because it’s Saturday, I do bath on other days too.

Actually, I shower.

But the last two days being ball-freezing cold, I have neglected my bodily needs.

Clorinha doesn’t seem to mind.

Being purred to sleep each night is wonderful. She’s up/down onto the bed as soon as I am. The up/down depends whether she leaps from the floor or the window.

A solid boomp in the face, she snuggles under my chin, pushes her nose into my armpit, not a place where I’d put my nose voluntarily, and purrs me to sleep.

Now the brass monkey above, is not the same brass monkey that I used in my reference to ‘cold’. Although, it is often mistakenly so.

Also a brass monkey

Also a brass monkey

The saying comes from an old naval term; a brass square used to hold cannonballs on a ships decks.

Once the weather got cold enough, the brass plate would shrink and dislodge the cannonballs.

See, nothing to do with testicles at all.

.

This is also a Brass Monkey

Another brass monkey

Another brass monkey

Dark rum, vodka and 4x the amount of fresh orange juice.

I fully suspect that this might knock one’s testicles off; or at least severely batter them about a bit.

The world is just full of brass monkeys.

The Sun is out, still cool, but after 48 hours the rain has stopped.

Today is Brazil vs Holland to see who is the third place getter in this infernal World Cup.

Both countries, Argentina and Germany believe they have the advantage for tomorrow’s final.

One has a pope, the other has an ex-pope.

Battle of the Popes

Really, it’s out of FIFA’s hands right now.

Loftier decisions are being made.

Read an interesting irritating article yesterday. British parents have been prosecuted for taking their kids on holiday to Australia for three weeks during term time.

The law, once again, proves to be an ass. It also shows how woefully inadequate and screwed up our education systems are.

Those kids would have learned more in three weeks travelling than they would have learned in the same period in school.  I say that with some authority, having declared that since I have been travelling throughout South America, my education has been completed; actually, it is an ongoing process.

Well, the sunny day was short-lived, it’s raining again. I wonder if Clorinha has the sense to come in out of the rain today?

Speaking of cats, I am going for a trip down memory lane.

Yesterday I found two photos long forgottten archived of Ellen Suelen, my step daughter, when she was seven.

The subject was the birth of Hello Kitty’s first litter of kittens. The place, on the mat under my bed. Five tiny damp furry balls were produced witnessed by Ellen, who took an immense interest in the proceedings.

Ellen immersed in the procedings

Ellen immersed in the goings on under my bed

Ellen dutifully informed us of every bloody detail, much like  a football commentator, lurid in every aspect.

As the proceedings came to a close, Ellen rolled over and looked up at me

As the proceedings came to a close, kittens all safely latched to a teat, Ellen rolled over and looked up at me

“I’m not having kids!”

“Why?” I asked innocently. Unaware that I was about to wear the brunt of a seven-year-old’s logic.

“Too messy!”

With that little anecdote, today’s postings come to a close.

My dishes sneered at me again while making coffee, so I will nap to get over that, much cheaper than therapy.

Oh, lunch, weinerschnitzel and bruschetta.

I had planned on a bacon & egg breakfast, but as it’s 11:40, it doesn’t seem right any more.

Clorinha is safely out of the rain and asleep on the sofa.

Licking our Wounds

The prestigeous 5 kilos of gold

The prestigious 5 kilos of gold

The day after, soul-searching, nursing severely bruised egos…

Not since 1920 has Brazil been so humiliated, Uruguay 6 – Brazil 0; mind you, Brazil did a 7 – 1 to Switzerland once.

After the game yesterday, even God cried; it rained as soon as the game finished..

At least we didn’t suffer the humiliation of being sent home… we’re already there.

And, it’s not our last game. Brazil plays the losers of today’s Holland vs Argentina game for a somewhat ignoble third place.

Nothing beats the glory of holding that 5 kilos of gold aloft.

I have been moping… and I’m not even a real Brazilian, so I imagine how they feel, I feel their pain, I share it. I haven’t even done the dishes, nor blogged, nor read the news, but I did have a wonderful nap.

LikebuttonI have a heap of comments to reply to, and I thank all those who took the time to share my sorrow, and visit bloggers who took their time to click my ‘Like’ button. I will get round to it today, promise.

Today marks a return to normal; class tonight, pay my net bill, and buy some bread to make supper tonight after class.

Another cool sunny day, rescued a guava, fell off the bucket doing so. Left me clutching the gate for dear life. I returned to the kitchen for another coffee to settle rattled nerves. I know, I should invest in a ladder instead of using an upturned bucket, but then I would have only fallen from higher.

Lunch has been had; homemade fish bites leftover from yesterday.

Blogging right along…

Later.

I wonder what Cruel will use against the Argentinians? He’ll need stronger medicine than just psyching tem out; maybe…

Brazil 1Germany 7

“Hosts Brazil suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in World Cup history as Germany scored five times in the first half in reaching the final.” – BBCNews

Brazil waited until the 90th minute to start its come back… too late.

Scolari will have some hard questions to answer; like why didn’t he put Jefferson in goal after the third German goal?

I came home after the fifth goal and opened the Chardonnay, not to celebrate, but it had one of those stupid screw caps and when I turned the bottle in the rack, it cracked the seal… Has to be drunk.

I am feeling very morose. Brazil is my adopted country and after 20+ years here to see Brazil lose so dramatically at home in its own World Cup cuts very deeply.

Now I fear the repercussions.

Will the people turn on the political aspects of the cup and the costs?

Will this sound the death knell for the PT political party and Dilma?

Will we witness a new round of civil unrest and destruction?

Later, I’m off to finish that Chardonnay.

After Yesterday’s Fiasco

Clorinha being a book under my lappy table

Clorinha being a book under my lappy table

The first thing I did this morning when I woke up was to take a nap.

I guess most people would call it sleeping in.

I was so cozy with Clorinha purring under my chin, I didn’t have the heart to move; so I fell asleep again.

She is growing up and getting bigger.

Today is another footballess day. (Should that have three ‘l’s?)

Tomorrow is a different story. Brazil vs Colombia. Brazilians have a day off, so do the Colombians.

Brazil-vs-Colombia-World-Cup

An important day for both countries.

Yesterday’s lunch:

yesterdayslunch

Which goes part way to explaining my M.I.A. day.

intel-inside-idiot-outsideI found this, which might have been more applicable for yesterday’s post.

Yesterday at the supermarket, I nearly bought some Australian wine… screw caps, back on the shelf.

Pity, it looked good too.

The neighbour’s cat who sneaks in and steals Clorinha’s food has taken a liking to me at the botequim and always comes for a pet.

The neighbour's cat

The neighbour’s cat

She’s beautiful and got a belly full of paws and claws.

But she will give Clorinha a box around the ears; and won’t come near me at home.

Although she’s getting game, she just appeared at the bedroom door, looked at me then scarpered.

Lunch will be fried fish leftovers, they were for yesterday, but BBQ took preference.

Cool sunny day, class at 5:30.

This World Cup has played havoc with my teaching hours. I won’t know until the end of the game tomorrow if I have a class on Tuesday or not. If Brazil wins, I don’t have class; if Brazil loses, I have class.

I came home yesterday and found this…

Beer crates outside my gate

Beer crates outside my gate

My immediate thought was “There is a God after all”, then I realised they were empties waiting to be loaded on the truck. Back to being an atheist.

I am looking at doing something constructive after this post, first lunch, then I may divide one of my pot plants into two pots. I could look at the dishes… but then that’s all I’ll do; I can’t ruin my reputation by doing them three times in a week.

Tummy rumbling, a sure sign that I need to eat.

Later.

I got all excited

Indeed, I was all a dither.

No, no, not with the football, that was to come later.

kitchesink

It’s not a myth, my sink does have a bottom

I actually got so carried away that I did the dishes.

Yes, I found the bottom of the kitchen sink… it’s still there.

Such a rare and momentous occasion, I took a photo, because I know by comments, that some may actually doubt that the bottom of my kitchen sink is ever visible.

Anticipating the cup already

Anticipating the cup already

Later, I got all excited again. This time it was the football. Brazil vs Chile. I wore my new investment.

We had a good crowd at the botequim. I wasn’t the only one dressed in his Brazilian finery. We had our funny hats too.

Esstential tools for football watching

Essential tools for football watching

Following the win, I broke out my bottle of Johnny Walker reserved for such occasions.

We settled down for the two hour wait for the next game Colombia vs Uruguay, Colombia sent Uruguay packing 2-0.

So Brazil plays Colombia in the quarter finals.

Much merriment, as can be seen in the following video clip.

So, I got all excited twice yesterday.

Now, I’m off to watch the rest of Holland vs Mexico…

Now I know why it’s called PMS.

I must admit that when I was married, I never noticed; I just thought she was always like that and that was the way of things.

But one thing I did learn… when to duck and how fast.

You never know what to expect from this blog. I love to keep my readers guessing.

man-stumbling

WARNING! Stumbling block

My attempts to go viral failed miserably. Although I did break my record, twice.

Belated Likes on a couple of past posts took them over my stumbling block of 15; I got 16 on both.

So, I have a new target.

I have just watched Italy sent packing by Uruguay. A sad game where one of the Uruguayan players bit an Italian on the shoulder and the referee refused to pursue the matter.

The standard of refereeing generally has been appalling, many of them need to be recycled, preferably as PET bottles.

Yesterday’s win by Brazil against Cameroon 4-1 despite the dirty play by Cameroons repeatedly marking Neymar. He showed them by scoring two goals of the four.

Brazil’s next game is against Chile on Saturday, at least that doesn’t interfere with classes.

It’s back to work today, after a week off because of the Cup. Then tomorrow off to recover from the shock.

I didn't get a squiggly one, they always make me feel as if I have been screwed

I didn’t get a squiggly one

Finally, after four days of darkness in the kitchen, I borrowed the ladder from the botequim and changed the light bulb. These things take time. It’s not procrastination nor laziness, but one has to seriously consider all the ramifications.

I got a straight one, the squiggly ones always make me feel as if I have been screwed and I don’t need a constant reminder in the ceiling.

Pondering! Why do they make light fittings so high? Not everyone has a step-ladder, but everyone has a chair, so why can’t they be just stand-on-a-chair high?

I learned the other day that the Centenary Light Bulb has burned out. That’s like 106 years. It can be done, our stupid planned obsolescence laws won’t allow it.

I read yesterday that the Sudanese woman sentenced to death for apostasy was released. Then I read this morning that her husband and her kids and her have been arrested as they tried to board a plane to America. Her husband is an American. WTF is going on? Why can’t these overzealous idiots leave them in peace to get on with their lives.

La tienda, a neighbourhood shop

La tienda, a neighbourhood shop

Have you ever heard of Cerro Rico? It’s in Bolivia overlooking the city of Potosí. I have been there and been down in the mines many times when I was a tour guide. I posted an article by The Guardian on Tomus today, The Mountain that Eats Men.

Potosí lives for the silver, it’s a strange town where you can buy sticks of dynamite and fuse at the local tienda along with your soda and candies. In fact the kids can buy it for their older brothers or fathers.

The silver mined from Cerro Rico by the Spanish, if melted could have built a bridge all the way to Spain.

I love Potosí, at 4,000 metres above sea level, it’s really cold at night. It’s a sleepy picturesque town.

Nothing Short of a Miracle

Not this type of record

Not this type of record

7am and all my blogging is done for the day. Yes, that’s a record.

Question is… Now what do I do?

I have to try my hand at carpentry. I cut the wood for some shelves a week or so ago, now I have to nail them together.

There’s always the dishes. OMG what a prospect.

Then, there’s the kitty box needs new sand.

I have to put some credits in my cellphone; then ring the ex and wish her Happy Mother’s Day. I didn’t have credits last weekend.

I am waiting for a package from DHL sent from NZ. I’ve been tracking it. First it went to Singapore, then Germany, now it’s in Madrid. I guess the next move is Rio. This is so exciting. Now that shows you what a mundane life I lead when tracking a package across the world is the daily highlight.

28 days to go for the World Cup. I noticed this yesterday.

NewZealandorAustralia

Some idiot has given NZ’s flag to Australia. And I’m not sure that South Korea should be called ‘Republic’, it is, but then so is North Korea; this makes it all look like one country. Of course, NZ isn’t playing in this cup, got knocked out by Mexico.

Sunny day out there. I’ve already been outside to chase off two neighbourhood cats attacking my little Clorinha. Lunch is planned, a whopping big pork loin chop more than an inch thick, with boiled potatoes and pumpkin. I’ll probably crack open the bottle of Cocha y Toro Chardonnay that’s chilling out in the fridge.

Clorinha has just brought in a new feather.

She's quick, I nearly missed the shot

She’s quick, I nearly missed the shot

My house is full of feathers! At least she’s not like her father; Cloro brought in coachroaches to play with. I prefer feathers, they’re not so icky.

I do feel a nap coming on…

Much More Reasonable

batteriesMy clock says it’s 1:17, I’m not sure if that is am or pm.

At least it’s right twice a day.

I must get a new battery.

The trouble is you can’t buy just one, they come in pairs or fours. By the time you need the next, you’ve forgotten where you put them.

Any way, it is about 4pm, a much more reasonable hour to produce a coherent post.

I have class at 5:30, so I have a comfortable hour before the mad panic to look like a teacher and walk off to class.

The sun is out, it is pleasantly cool, and it has rained a little during the course of the day.

Cooking again now that the weather is more pleasant. Lunch was an inch thick rump steak with all the fat, cooked to perfection, burnt brown on the outside bloody red in the middle with the fat cooked through. I do spoil myself; one of the few pleasures I still have.

Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop

Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop

I learned about ‘sockpuppets’ in a post the other day.

I was always under the impression that a sock puppet was like Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop; apparently wrong again.

“A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception.” Wikipedia

These are used for making comments, when one’s identity is banned, I believe.

See, you live and learn every day; even at my age.

The new stadium in Curitiba has been given a ninth hour reprieve and will host four games of the FIFA World Cup.

But not all Brazilians are in favour of the cup. It is costing the country billions in new/refurbished stadiums and infrastructure. Billions that could provide ordinary Brazilians a decent education and health.

Yesterday on Copacabana beach:

Copacabana Beach

“We need schools, hospitals and public security as high a quality as FIFA’s World Cup Stadiums”

Tells its own story.

The sad part of this is that some of these stadiums will never be used again at capacity. Some will fall into disrepair because local bodies cannot maintain the upkeep. The World Cup venues are, in the main, white elephants.

My view is if FIFA demand high quality venues, the FIFA pays for them, end of subject.

That time has arrived.
