I can count…

potato…to potato.

I saw this as a meme today and it tickled my fancy.

Yesterday, Beersday, I got bottled. Not seriously but I had a glow.

After I left you, I did, indeed, go to the botequim. There was the usual crowd of drinkers and boasters… and a guy selling fresh cheese and homemade sausages from the back of a pick-up.

Cheese samples were being handed around, which of course went well with the beer. R$15 for a kilo of cheese and R$15 for a bag of sausages. I got one of each. More cheese was cut, I produced a jar of pickled onions from home and we all proceeded to much away.

The day was hot, and more beer was drunk.

The day wore on, and in the afternoon I fired up the BBQ and sacrificed my bag of sausages. They were delicious and appreciated by those that were still clinging to their glasses. The sausages were served with pickled beetroot and homemade chimichurri.

Garlic-ButterThe breadman cycled past, I got 20 breadrolls. Back home, I got a block of butter, a head of garlic and some parsley from my garden. Fifteen minutes later there were garlic bread rolls on the grill.

Now the locals know that I am a chef, they’ve never actually seen me cheffing apart from flipping meat on the BBQ. Things like garlic butter are usually made at home and taken to the bar, but as I had the makings already there, I proceeded to chef away. peeled and chopped the garlic, chopped the parsley and beat the ingredients in the bowl. The onlookers stood there open mouthed at the speed I worked, and how fast there were garlicked bread rolls toasting on the grill. Of course, I was quite willing to show off (I am a bit of a ham) and accept the accolades.

The garlic bread disappeared off the platter as fast as it left the grill.

Had João, the breadman, gone past again, they would have had me making garlic bread way into the night.

While doing all this I got bottled… Various bottles of beer that I had in the fridge migrated to the freezer to get that chill on, you know that layer of ice on pouring.

Now that I have regaled you with yesterday’s exploits, I am about to do the same again today.

Oh, my kilo of soft cheese is salted with rock salt and in the fridge. Salt for three days, wash and turn daily for a month… and yum!

A Reluctant Start

Yesterday my excuse was procrastination, today reluctance.

Today is 1st May, Dia do Trablaho (Labor Day). I have coffee and am fully prepared to do nothing all day. May is a weird month to have Labor Day, I grew up with Labour Day in October, oh I get so confused.

I have just taken the meat out of the freezer, going to have BBQ all day. Big juicy hunks of pork and beef. Well, they’re not juicy at the moment, sort of hard and crusty, but give them a couple of hours. Good thing this is not my beefless week.

firefoxaddonI am wary of all this modern technology. I don’t have ad ons and apps. I don’t like them, I don’t trust them.

But I discovered that Firefox has a useful one, so cute and fluffy.

I am talking about the ad blocker. I got frustrated one day, and it happened to be the day that I read a post on a techy-type blog about FF ad-on that blocks annoying advertising, so I installed it and am mildly pleased with the results. It doesn’t block all ads, but my frustration level has been reduced by half; the rest I reduce by adding more coffee.

The padeiro (breadman) has just been, a BBQ isn’t complete without garlic bread sizzling on the grate. The way people cook garlic bread has always amused me. It has been my observation that people always toast the butter side first. This is just plain stupid, and indeed belongs in the annuls of stupidity. If you grill the butter side first the butter and garlic all drips off on to the coals; sure smells wonderful, but what a waste. Grill the off-side first and the butter permeates through the bread and stays there when you flip it over.

When you open a box of milk, it has instructions ‘abra aqui’ (open here), you can see it there on the box.

What happens if you don’t obey the law and open the other side?

Does the milk come out backwards?

You see, although I am fast approaching my dotage, I still have an alert and inquiring mind.

There is so much in the world that needs to be examined.

With that, I will blog along. This has been a three-coffee post, no cats were injured writing, but that could change if I find cat hair on the clean black shirt that I left on the sofa.

The Silly Season

Here we are in the midst of the Silly Season.

We have survived the end of the world… again and have probably got through Christmas relatively unscathed. Although, can the same be said of your wallet?

I have been through with Christmas presents for some years; I get none and I give none. Now some may think that to be soulless, but it’s practical. I don’t have to compete in shops with the milling crowds, I am not held to ransom by inflated prices and I remain sane and unstressed, if not a little tiddly.

The world economy is in the shit. Governments want you to spend to boost the economy. But what have you got to spend? Certainly not money. So put it on the credit card and spend the next year paying off your excesses, just in time to do it all again.

Using credit cards is a fool’s game. It keeps you permanently in debt. Oh sure, it’s nice and easy, but can you control your spending. If you answer ‘yes’, then you are self deluded. The only way to control your spending is to cut your card in half. I did it, and now all my money is mine.

Next we must brace ourselves for New Year. How will you survive?

Just had a break, neighbours are having a BBQ, and I always get asked to make the garlic butter, they supply the ingredients and I make it. Most Brazilians believe that garlic butter should be made with mayonnaise, and as a result it tastes like shit, well burnt shit actually. I make it with margarine and it makes beautiful golden garlic bread.

So, I am now about to enjoy the fruits of my labour, it’s beer o’clock…
