Ta Dah!

I know you are all waiting…

My first attempt at making makimonos.

The first half dozen

The first half dozen makimonos

Okay, they’re not exactly round, and I couldn’t get them to close off nicely; too much filling.

So I ate the ugly ones, and made some more…

Getting better

Getting better

That’s the platter that went to the botequim. None came back alive; the makimonos that is, not the fregües (regulars)!

They were what we call here in Brazil Filedefia, salmon with cream cheese coloured off with chopped parsley.

Learning curve – I cooked way too much rice; which turned out perfect btw.

Today, I am going to roast off the salmon skin and have a go at making nigris, I hope the rice survived the night in the fridge.

bloodtypeWheee!

This is fun.

I’m addicted to love coffee!

Just made fresh. Had to use yesterday’s leftover first. I hate waste.

Apparently, the Queen does NOT purr, as per David Cameron’s remark when referring to HM’s reaction to the Scots referendum.

He said that he’s embarrassed and apologised to HM for the off hand remark.

HM was not amused. These royals are such a stuffy lot.

notpurrGoogle has been threatened with a $6bn fine if it doesn’t play ball with the European over their methods of prioritising search results. Google is just too big for its boots.

Nasty little buggers

Aedes aegypti – Nasty little buggers

Two bits of news from Brazil. First Brazil refused to sign the deforestation pact; the blonde bimbo was miffed that the world didn’t consult Brazil when making the draft.

Secondly, Brazilian researchers have turned the Aedes aegypti mosquito against itself. That’s the one that causes dengue fever which can be fatal. They’ve got a bacteria that turns the second generation sterile; so reducing the breeding population.

Reports show that where the mosquitoes have been released in other parts of the world there has been a 30% reduction in numbers.

Shellshock! There is another new bug out there. According the report Heartbleed affected 500,000 pcs, this new one has a potential reach of 5 million. And what’s worse, is that where Heartbleed was a sniffer, Shellshock allows the machine to be controlled. It is aimed at Macs and Linux… You can read about it on BBCNews.

TEASER-Barack-Obama-coffee-cup-saluteThe Latte Salute… Obama is in the poo again. Returning a military salute with a Starbucks cup in his right hand. The disrespect caused a bit of a ruckus on Twitter.

Watched football last night. Flamengo vs São Paulo 2-2, so am tired today.

I’m off to unwilt my plants, by then it will be time for Nap-fu practice.

Short day today, lessons start at 4pm.

Organising my Christmas Spirit

christmasspiritsI have said that I don’t ‘do’ Christmas, but I do celebrate Quafftide.

For this reason I am showing you my Christmas Spirits.

Yesterday my bossette gave me a bottle of Finca Alcayata Syrah, an Argentine wine from Mendoza.

I gave myself a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red Label (It was on special at the supermarket, $20 off normal price – irresistible).

Today is a short day. Normally my lessons start around 5pm, but today I have a 2pm, it just makes the day seem so short. So I am pounding the keys like a madman trying to get all my blogging done.

Emmylee Selfie

Emmylee doing a selfie

Selfies; do you know what a selfie is?

I hate them!

They must be the epitome of vanity; an ego trip. Photos everywhere today are selfies.

Even my daughter, Emmylee, leaves selfies on my cameras.

What’s with this selfie obsession?

It’s becoming harder and harder to understand the younger generation. It makes me wonder if I generated the same questions for my grandmother… I wonder what she would have blogged about if blogs were around in her days…

obama-castro-shake-hands

The gentlemanly thing to do

Obama was castigated for shaking hands at Mandela’s wake with Cuban dictator Raul Castro.

What was he to do on the spur of the moment at such a solemn occasion? Tell him to “F**k off!”

For me he did the right thing, the gentlemanly thing. I don’t agree with much everything that he has done, but this was done right.

The weather here hasn’t really recovered from last week, it’s still overcast and there is a threat of rain tonight and tomorrow. Still, I like it like this, I can drink hot coffee without sweating.

Time for more coffee, then that all important nap.

Dizzy Lizzy Pills

I need one of these

I seriously need one of these

Despite my having taken the dizzy lizzy pills as prescribed at regular +/- give-or-take intervals, I still have the occasional dizzy lizzy.

Like last night, the final ten minutes of class threatened to send me into an embarrassing collapse in mid-flight. Then again during the night, I woke at 1, something, o’clock and tried to sit up in bed… whoops, wrong thing to do; I fell back in an amoebic-like heap and lay still letting the fan play across my sweating form until I finally fell asleep waking two hours later feeling fine +/-.

My head feels a little thick, okay, thicker than it normally feels! But I think (ouch that hurts) I’ll get through the day; especially as it is a day off.

Today, I attempt a god-like miracle. I will attempt the resurrection of my beloved little saucepan (see yesterday’s post). I haven’t got a fancy rock to roll away, and Mary Magdalene hasn’t stopped by, yet.

I so wanted smoke out of his ears, but couldn't find one

No, Bradley, I will not be calling you Celeste

Bradley Manning has, or at least, wants to be Celeste, the big question is, now that he has been imprisoned for 35 years, will the army let him?

You see, I was right again; the army judge didn’t award him the Medal of Honor which he justifiably deserved.

Obama really has his panties in a twist over these guys.

I bet he’s fuming over Snowden.

I so wanted smoke pouring out of his ears, but couldn’t find one. Google is really so slack.

Fish for lunch, baked, poached, fried, I haven’t decided… yet. Snap decision when I open the fridge. It’s times like these that I really miss my Lixo, he so loved the trimmings of the fish as I prepared it. Gone but not forgotten my little friend.

There has been a suggestion, that the use of nerve gas in Syria, was a deliberate attempt to escalate the situation to armed conflict, in effect a ‘false flag’ situation. These seem to be prevalent wherever America is involved, almost so prevalent as to be totally discarded as a coincidence. It really makes one wonder WTF is going on? And, personally, I find the answer scary!

Think of it like this…

shadyas

The dogs represent our traditional enemies and fears, whereas the cat represents our security… America.

I think that is a brilliant analogy… of course, I would, it’s mine!

Must blog along, much to do today, despite the woolly head.

Later.

Listening for the rumble…

Must go to store and buy new calendar

Well, yesterday I had hoped for a ripple, and today the day, not even a rumble.

Have we been duped again?

Here in Brazil it’s nearly 11am, which means it’s 2am on the 22nd in New Zealand, and I have scanned the news and apparently New Zealand is still there, and Google Earth shows no gaping hole where Australia should be.

Oh well, all that hype for nothing. I guess I will have to pay for the beer after all. I was informed yesterday by a realiable source, that should the world end and we all finish up on the other side that there the beer was free… sounded a bit like heaven to me.

As I said, it is 11am here, already the day is hot, the fan is blowing hot air, Lixo is looking for a cold place to cat nap, I even let my coffee get cold so I would break out in a sweat drinking it.

Looks like the USA is about to meet the ‘fiscal cliff’. The Republicans have withdrawn their Plan B and there is nothing else on the table that would appease the Obama admin, and there is unlikely to be within the next ten days.

I rather hope that the moment arrives, because it’s about the only thing that shows promise of a solution to the greed of the 1%, the bankers and Wall Street. Of course, it will have serious ramifications for the rest of the world, but given the current climate, I think it is necessary to bring the world back to some form of sanity because anything suggested by the government would take eons to reduce the debt and reduce spending. It might just bring America to heel with regard to military spending. No money, can’t fight wars and kill innocents. The whole system has become one massive failure.

Maybe that’s what the Mayans were on about…

Ah, a rumble!

Is it happening?

But alas no, it was just the truck delivering beer to the botequim next door. At least there will be beer this weekend.

So far, not even a ripple

With the end of the world supposedly approaching, you would have thought that there may have been some signs already.

I am curious as to whether it will be a slow rumbling sort of end, or a ‘rip-whoosh-bang’ ending. The latter would be so disappointing for one such as myself expecting a spectacle.

I got an email from a great friend yesterday. The tone of which was most unexpected given that this person is a scientist who has published many papers and speaks several languages fluently. He is also a pianist and has composed hence his reference to Beethoven’s 5th. Being such a serious type of person, it goes without saying that he is almost devoid of a sense of humour, not quite, but close. I sent him the YouTube link of my passion fruit flowers being inspected by an abelha negra (big black bumble bee) for pollinating (you can find the clip in this post). This was the reaction…

“I always wondered who uploads these shitty videos on youtube 🙂

Very beautiful humble bee, indeed, I kept watching the video for hours. I mean, four hours. Again and again, absolutely stunning images. They fit very well to Beethoven’s fifth symphony (beginning). They also combine well with rice, vinegar and dehydrated cucumbers. And to the number 777. And, of course, to my favourite colour: smelly.

I think I am wheeled. Or at least, completely tired. Wheel, tire, who cares. The Chinese would anyhow say that I am a “wheeldo”.”

I was stunned. Having known this person for more than ten years, I never suspected, nor expected that.

Moving right along…

I see that the latest tragedy in the USA has planted the idea of gun control in Obama’s tiny little brain.  The aim of the government has been for sometime to de-arm the populace so as to reduce resistance to the government in the event of the coming crisis. What better way to achieve one’s aims than riding on the crest of the public hysteria wave; make it seem as it is what they want.

Today, I am classless. I cunningly combined today’s classes with yesterdays. So very shortly it will be beer o’clock, but before that I thought it only right that I should write a post.

The days continue to be hot, although yesterday showed promise of rain, lots of thunder and lightning, a light sprinkle and that was it. They have been promising storms since the weekend, so much for the hit and miss technology of the meteorologist.

People ask me if I am animado (looking forward) to Christmas. I am about as animated as a dead fish. Christmas fails to stir an iota of interest other than it’s a good reason to drink beer. The hype and commercialisation has destroyed any pleasure. In effect it is a day when I can’t give class, therefore don’t get paid.

My coffee cup is empty. I should consider lunch before beer o’clock looms over the horizon. The clouds of a good storm are already looming… probably come to nothing.

Feelings

I am totally numb after last night, so totally, that I have switched off.

It has nothing to do with the three gin & tonics I had yesterday afternoon, nor the beers that followed.

We had music in the praça last night, lots and lots of very loud music.

The botequim had the Boa da Samba van again; I wrote about this on my recent post An Idyllic Thursday. Normally when this van comes along, I escape for more peaceful climes, like a good restaurant, but last night I was skint. This public holiday lark plays havoc with ones finances, hence the skintedness.

So, I figured, it wouldn’t hurt to spend one night listening to the music. It started around 6pm, I couldn’t hear the TV, I couldn’t hear my mother on the phone, the bass reverberated through the house; by 7pm I had a thumping headache. I tried going for a walk to sit on the other side of the park, that was no relief, so back home. All the windows were shut, Lixo was confused because even his ‘cat-window’ was closed. By 9:30, I was praying (remember I am an atheist) the music would stop at 10pm as programmed and that they wouldn’t do encore after encore.

10:03pm, peace and quiet. It was so quiet you could hear the silence.

NOT this Axe

During the week, I saw an interesting Tweet regarding the masculine deodorant Axe by a girl. “The only way you’ll conquer a girl with Axe, would be to spray it in her eyes to incapacitate her!” I don’t use Axe, it is beyond my price range, but it made me wonder if that was really the case for a lot of perfumes.

Quite frankly, I hate perfumes and makeup, and high heels and breast implants, and sexy lingerie and body piercings; in fact there’s not much about the world of female fashions that I do like. I like my women to be natural, nude is far more sexy than lace.

Last week I also saw an interesting ad on TV, shampoo that has caffeine… Now what would I want shampoo with caffeine for (apart from the fact that I’m bald)? You’d lie in bed trying to get to sleep and you can’t because your hair wants to get up and play! Stupid pratts!

They really do produce some useless shit.

Two days until the US elections. I am waiting to see how stupid Americans really are.

You have a choice between Obama, who has destroyed all meaning of the Constitution; and Romney who has back peddled so many times that he doesn’t know if he’s coming or going.

In my opinion, if you vote for the Democraps or the Repugnicans, you’re a fool. There are other options for intelligent people.

Sigh! But we all know what is going to happen.

I’ll be back later with a Travel post, this post was actually meant for yesterday but with the thunderous music last night that just wasn’t possible.
